» Article: The Irony of Yoga Fashion and Its Gusseted Crotch of Higher Consciousness
from my other blog! yoga is much more than some exercise!

I love yoga. It has helped me develop my own spiritual, physical, mental, and personal health. I highly believe in taking care of yourself in order sustain one’s own well-being in order to continue serving the people in your community and personal life. I am a womyn of color living the SF Bay area who is currently in a Yoga teaching fellowship program for People of Color to teach yoga in our communities that need it most and as a way to develop as a career. This article touches upon commodification and appropriation of yoga as an industry in terms of fashion. But it is much deeper than Lululemon and their $99 pullover tops (which is so contradictory to the practice of Yoga and disturbing to me that small children in the 3rd world are making yoga pants for skinny pretzel girls from the Mission). Yoga is not made for people to just exercise and relax, yes, those are great benefits, but really it is meant to help us heal, help us reach to the point of enlightenment and great positive change for ourselves and our world and is part of a greater philosophy of spirituality while the western world has taken yoga as “just some exercise.” To make us buy a bunch of material items that will give us some false sense of spiritualism. As with everything we have here in the US, it is watered down and taken for what benefits us externally than WHOLLY, what is quick and convenient, than what is deeper and challenging to our own state of mind, body and soul. I challenge people to take back what is taken from us and redefine it rather than take what we’ve been sold.
